Nicobar Islands situated on the south east of Bay of Bengal comprises of 28 islands with an area of 1841 square kilometers. Andaman and Nicobar islands are separated by a ten degree channel. As falling between the sea route from South India / Sri Lanka to Southeast Asia and vice-versa this island was referred to as the ‘land of the nake’. It is believed that Lord Ram have passed through the Nicobar Islands during his period of exile.

The Nicobar is rich in coconut-palm, casuarina and pandanus. Great and Little Nicobar comprises a wide variety of fauna. There are Giant Robber Crab, Monkeys with long tail and a large number of Nicobarese Pigeons. Megapode, a rare bird is found in Great Nicobar. The southernmost tip of India is not Kanyakumari as has till recently been considered, it is Indira Point in Great Nicobar Island. Some of the must visit places in Nicobar island are:

Car Nicobar

Car Nicobar is marked by its flat surface except for some cliffs in the north and small hilly areas in the interior. It is bordered by a silvery beach and areas of flat ground consisting of Coraline diluvium. Car Nicobar is an important place in Nicobar islands. It is the headquarters of Nicobar District. Car Nicobar is fertile with a cluster of coconut palms . The stunning beaches and the roaring sea enhances the beauty of this island. The Nicobari huts, built on stilts with entrance through floor with a wooden, ladder, are a unique feature of this island. This wonderful island is situated about 16 hrs. journey by sea from Port Blair.

Katchal

Katchal is one of the largest islands in the central group. Katchal spreads about an area of 61 square miles. It is slightly hilly in the centre but also has a remarkable flat area. Katchal has the most suitable soil for paddy cultivation. It was this island, which heralded the new millennium with the first sunrise on 1st January 2000. Katchal island is famous for the beautiful beaches at East bay, Jhula and West bay.

Great Nicobar

Great Nicobar is the southernmost end of the Nicobar group of islands. Here most of the area is hilly and undulating. The highest peak Mount Thuillier is in here. This island has Indira Point formerly called as Pygmalion Point, the southernmost tip of India. The beach near Galathia, the nesting ground for Giant Leatherback Turtles is one of the attractions of Great Nicobar. There is a biosphere reserve area in Great Nicobar. This island is 50-60 hrs. journey by sea from Port Blair.
